County releases Request for Proposals for historic Bull Barn at North Parks/Roping Arena area

We’re taking steps to attempt to utilize long-neglected County property and resources. A lot of the structures and lands the County no longer uses are in disrepair but have sentimental value attached to their histories. The Presidio County Bull Barn is no exception.

For reference, the Bull Barn is not the large Red Barn at the Roping area; its a smaller tall building closer to the roadway with two small outbuildings and some pens.

The Bull Barn was built in 1932 as an exhibition and sale barn and originally operated under a long term lease with the County by the Highland Hereford Association. The original terms of the lease provided that a County Fair would be held onsite each year open to all as a provision of the granting of the land rights. Although the Association for years was able to successfully put on bull auctions and shows there, there was never a County Fair. In the modern era, the barn fell into disuse and disrepair.

I have not known of an event of any sort there since I moved here in 2007. The intent of the Commissioners Court here is to lease the Bull Barn and its described property of approximately 5 acres to a group or individual who will bring the building back into use with a function that would also benefit the public in some fashion. The Highland Hereford Association’s lease has been terminated (officially) and in this week’s paper there will be an advertisement for the Request For Proposals regarding the property. Applications and further information can be collected from the Presidio County Attorney’s Office on the second floor of the courthouse. Applications are due by June 25th, 2025.
